SIP_ENTERTAINMENT~At the entrance to the harbor of St. John's stands the famous Signal Hill, which offers a view of the city and the sea. In 1901, the first transatlantic wireless signal was received here. This location also played a strategic role in the Seven Years' War (1756 – 1763), although the fortifications currently present were constructed during the War of 1812.
One of the key structures on Signal Hill is Cabot Tower, which was built in 1897 to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of Newfoundland's discovery. This tower is also renowned for being the site where Guglielmo Marconi organized the first transatlantic radio communication in 1901, a signal that traveled a distance of 2,700 km from England. Inside the tower, there are exhibits reflecting the history of Signal Hill, as well as the history of communication (with a special section dedicated to Marconi). From the upper section, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view that encompasses the city and the coastline all the way to Cape Spear, the easternmost point of North America.
